Logo vs. brand identity: what are you actually paying for?

A logo and a brand identity are not the same purchase. Understanding the difference helps you brief better, budget better and get work that lasts longer.

Logo vs. brand identity: what are you actually paying for? — cover

When a business asks for "a logo", what they usually need is a brand identity — and the confusion between the two is where most disappointing design projects start. A logo is a single mark. An identity is the full system that mark lives in: colours, typography, layout rules, image style and tone. The logo is the signature; the identity is the handwriting.

Why a logo alone rarely solves the problem

A great logo dropped into inconsistent colours, random fonts and improvised layouts will still look improvised. The opposite is also true: a modest logo inside a tight, consistent system looks professional everywhere it appears. That is why identity systems outperform standalone logos — the system does the daily work, the logo just signs it.

Colour tools and creative materials used when building a brand system
The identity is everything around the logo: colour, type, layout and tone.

What a proper identity includes

  • Logo set: primary mark, compact variant, and rules for dark/light backgrounds.
  • Colour palette with defined roles — not just swatches, but when to use what.
  • Typography: display and body fonts, sizes and hierarchy that scale from business card to billboard.
  • Usage examples: social templates, documents, signage — proof the system works in the real world.

How to budget for it

If the budget only allows one thing, invest in the system, not a more elaborate logo. A simple wordmark with strong rules will carry a business for years. And when you compare quotes, check what is actually included: a €300 "logo" and a €3000 identity are different products, not different prices for the same thing.

People do not remember logos in isolation — they remember the consistent world built around them.
