Five signs your website is costing you clients

Most underperforming websites fail for the same handful of reasons. Here are five warning signs you can check in ten minutes — and what to do about each.

Five signs your website is costing you clients — cover

A website is never neutral. Every day it either builds trust and generates enquiries, or it quietly sends visitors to a competitor. The frustrating part: the problems are usually invisible to the owner, because you know your business too well to see the site the way a stranger does. These five checks expose the most common leaks.

1. Nobody can tell what you do in five seconds

Open your homepage, count to five, close it. Could a stranger say what you offer, for whom, and what to do next? If the first screen is a vague slogan or a full-screen animation with no message, visitors bounce before the beautiful part ever loads.

2. There is no obvious next step

Every page needs one clear action: book a call, request a quote, view the work. If your contact option is hidden in the footer or buried in a menu, you are asking interested people to work for the privilege of paying you.

A homepage should answer three questions instantly: what, for whom, and what next.

3. It is slow on a phone

More than half of your visitors are on mobile, often on mediocre connections. Oversized images, autoplaying video and heavy scripts can push load times past the point where people simply give up. Compress images to modern formats, lazy-load everything below the fold, and test on a real phone — not just your desktop.

4. There is no proof

Claims are cheap; evidence converts. Real project images, named testimonials, recognisable client logos and concrete outcomes do more persuading than any amount of adjectives. If your site says "quality" but shows nothing, visitors assume the opposite.

5. It has not changed in years

A visibly outdated site suggests an outdated business — fair or not. A dated copyright year, dead links and a design from two trend cycles ago all signal neglect. Regular small updates beat a dramatic redesign every five years.

Your website is your hardest-working salesperson — or your most expensive one to keep doing nothing.
