Whether you run a studio, freelancing side, or a small product team, the question is the same: which image model should you actually pay for? In 2026 there is no single winner — there are specialists. Midjourney still leads on aesthetic ceiling and mood. Flux leads on photorealism and cost-effective volume. GPT Image (OpenAI) leads on prompt adherence and on-image text. Ideogram and Recraft carve out typography niches. Choosing wrong wastes subscription money — choosing by job does not. Start at Midjourney or ChatGPT depending on whether you need mood or literal control.
A trust-oriented cheat sheet
- Art direction / cinematic concepts: Midjourney V8.x — strong taste, lighting and composition; weaker on literal text and batch control.
- Photoreal product / headshots / volume: Flux 2 — solid realism and API workflows; slightly weaker prompt obedience than GPT Image.
- Text-in-image, multi-element briefs, API pipelines: GPT Image 2 — best instruction-following; less "gallery" look than Midjourney by default.
- Posters, labels, designed graphics: Ideogram or Recraft — built for layout and commercial graphic jobs.
- Commercial-safe defaults: Adobe Firefly — trained with clearer licensing posture for many brand contexts.

Where trust still breaks
Even the 2026 leaders fail in predictable ways. Exact brand colours drift. Hands and fine anatomy still need checking. Logo fidelity is unreliable — never ship a generated mark as the final identity. Character consistency across a campaign is better than it was, but still needs reference workflows and human QA. And "looks great in a Discord gallery" is not the same as "passes a client brand review on a phone screen".
Trust a model for exploration. Trust a designer for decisions that carry a brand.
How I use AI on real projects
Moodboards, style exploration and throwaway concepts: AI is excellent. Final client assets that need legal clarity, brand consistency and craft: human-led, with AI only where it speeds a step you still control. If a deliverable must match pantone values, typography rules and a system that lasts years, generation is a sketch — not the finish.
